Student-led fundraiser provides access to clean drinking water in developing countries
It's "Hockey Night in Hamilton" - or more specifically, in the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board - thanks to the enterprising efforts of the board's seven secondary student council presidents who have partnered with the Hamilton Bulldogs to raise funds for the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace.
HWCDSB Hockey Night takes place on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 when the Hamilton Bulldogs take on the Barrie Colts at FirstOntario Centre at 7:00 p.m. Hockey Night is modelled after Family Day, except that instead of offering discounted tickets to families, ticket sales are targeted to students, staff and alumni of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. Tickets are available for $15, with $2 from each ticket going to the Development and Peace Caritas Canada Charity.
The idea for the system-wide fundraiser was raised last September by members of the Catholic Presidents' Council who wanted to create an event similar to the Hamilton Bulldogs School Game Day. School Game Day brings together students from all of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board's elementary schools for a day of hockey and fun. The event also also helps to fund local school breakfast programs. More than 6,000 students from HWCDSB schools attended this year's School Game Day on February 8th.
After witnessing the success of that event, Mikayla D'Agostino, President of the Student Council at Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School, contacted the Hamilton Bulldogs to see if they would partner with the students on another event. The result was Hockey Night, with tickets offered to students, staff, friends and alumni of the HWCDSB at a discounted price. A portion of the ticket price will be directed to the Development and Peace Caritas Canada Charity. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace is the member organization in Canada of CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS, a Confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social service organizations working on behalf of the poor and oppressed in 198 countries and territories. It is one of the largest NGO networks in the world (Development and Peace Caritas Canada website).
The charity was chosen to align with a "WE Walk for Water" youth day in Toronto on May 8th. Funds raised from the Christian Service activity will be donated to Development and Peace Caritas Canada to build wells and provide clean drinking water in developing countries.
"Lastly," said Teacher-Advisor Claudia Sambuco, "this hockey event was selected over other sporting events because hockey is our national sport and the council wanted to support Hamilton's very own team. It's very Canadian."
The Hockey Night game was also thought to be a great venue for students to come together as one big school community in a fun setting, she added.
"They will have the opportunity to see an action-packed game while enjoying some popcorn and pop. It's also a great way for students to destress and take some time for themselves."
