System Science and Engineering Fair - March 3, 2018

Event Date: Mar 03, 2018

Roughly 350 students from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will compete for medals and awards at this year's 36th Annual System Science and Engineering Fair at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School on Saturday, March 3, 2018.

Science projects are undertaken in one of six categories: Biotechnology, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physical Science.

All are relevant, says System Science and Engineering Fair Co-chairperson Michael Campbell.

"Science and engineering projects encourage young people to think of a problem, evaluate their findings and form conclusions about their world."

There's no shortage of topics, adds SSEF Co-chairperson Kevin MacIsaac. "Science is everywhere in today's world. Advances in technology and science are transforming our lives at an incredible pace and our children's future will be filled with leaps in technology we can only imagine."

Being "science literate" will no longer be simply an advantage, but an absolute necessity, he adds. "Participation in a science or engineering project can give students that inner edge."

The annual system science fair was established more than three decades ago as an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills in science in a fun, creative and challenging way. The fair has grown in popularity over the years to reflect technological advances, growing interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related careers, and increased awareness of and concern for the environment, says Assistant Superintendent of Education Greg Tabone.

"Some are typical in their exploration while others are more creative and involve deeper study and inquiry," he adds. The common denominator: "They give students the tools to problem solve."

Student exhibit set up takes place at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
